Age and Excuses

The fearsome Maughold Head Race is open to all ages, and just before the start the organisers were trying to persuade some of the older gentlemen of the Parish to take part.

Nobody actually refused outright, but instead they came up with a variety of ingenious excuses and impossible conditions. Our favourites:

“I will give it a go if the organisers can provide me with a Zimmer frame.”

“I’d like to race but the wife won’t let me.”

“I would be able to start if there were an ambulance here with a resuscitation unit.”

“I will need written approval from my insurers.”

And top marks for guile:

“The only running we do these days is when we are out shooting. So we can enter provided that we are allowed to carry our shotguns.”
